Eric, Summer 2016 Finance Intern

My first few weeks here at SiriusXM have been well.  I’ve been able to meet with most of the finance team here, attend conference calls and transition pretty smoothly into ongoing and future projects. I’ve been able to much better understand the company, its outlook for the future and analyze its strengths and weaknesses effectively. The people on the team are great—they are all critical thinkers with very apparent financial insight looking to improve SiriusXM’s strategic processes in various facets so it has been a good learning experience for me. My mentors, Charlie and Jeremy have been great- keeping me up to date with projects and allowing me to endeavor on certain analyses to project to them when I finished. It’s been great and the location also serves to be a very good outlet to networking with other people in NY in general. I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly so far and look forward to continuous learning and making substantial impact in future reports and analyses that SiriusXM will continue to have.

Joshua, Summer 2016 Music Programming Intern

I was interning at SXM two summers ago for the same department, which is programming for the EDM stations on SXM channels 51-55. Since this is my second time here, I know my supervisors very well as I have kept in touch with them.

They started me on a few assignments I will be doing regularly throughout the summer, including loading songs for certain radio shows they have coming up into the rotation. For example, each week the Chainsmokers do a show called the YouTube EDM 15, which consists of 15 songs that are blowing up on YouTube right now and Drew and Alex talk before and after each of the 15 songs. My Job was to load in those 15 songs for them to play.

Also, one of their key attributes on channel 52 is airing live sets and interviews from DJs at major music festivals around the world. A few weeks ago was EDC Vegas, which is their biggest festival coverage of the year and my job was to take the list of DJs they were going to interview and write a 2-3 sentence biography about them to prep the radio DJs, who are also my supervisors, for the interviews.

Some of the coolest things I’ve gotten to do though are projects like editing some of the weekly radio shows that the DJs record and send to Electric Area/BPM to be aired. So not only do I get to listen to the shows before they’re aired, I also get to edit it and make it sound better/cleaner, which I find very interesting. Also, they do BPM benders every once in a while, where a DJ comes in to do a mix for an hour or so and is broadcasted live on BPM. Usually Ben Harvey will talk to the artists/ask him questions during the mix as well as answer calls from fans that are calling across the country to talk to the DJ. I had the job of screening the calls and answering the phone first to see what the caller wanted to talk about and then write it on the monitor for Ben to look at, thus deciding if they were to take the caller or not.

I am happy to be back in this office and really like the guys I’m working with. It seems that being this is my second time interning with EDM programming, they are giving me more hands-on assignments in and out of the studio, which is what I was hoping for coming into the summer. Overall, it’s been an amazing experience so far and can’t wait for what the rest of the summer brings.

Kyle, Summer 2016 Digital Content Intern

Kyle Trietley

My first few weeks interning for the digital content department at SiriusXM has been tremendous. For the most part, I have been writing original blog posts, putting up weekly posts, or helping my coworkers with their projects. However, each day brings something new. I have been able to head to floor 36 to aid in photographing or getting footage of talent who come in as well as sit in on meetings where I was asked for input for upcoming campaigns,                                                        among other things.

It is clear my mentor, managers, and everyone else in the department have my best interests in mind. During one of my first days of work, my mentor sat down with me to find out what my goals were for the summer and what I was hoping to learn. I now have a broad list of skills I will hopefully be able to get experience in during my remaining weeks that I will be able to add to my résumé. Also, I have passion for electronic dance music (EDM), and some of my projects have allowed me to explore EDM specifically such as a post I wrote relating to Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.

I still have several weeks left at SiriusXM, and I’m looking forward to the experience my remaining time will bring!

Chris, Summer 2016 Finance Intern

Coming in as an intern in the finance department with no previous experience (professional or school) in finance, I definitely had my concerns about handling my workload. Those worries dissipated quickly after starting work here. Everyone I’ve dealt with has been extremely helpful which has made it very easy for me to get acclimated. So far, I’ve worked on pulling invoices and expense reports, comparing budgeted costs to actual costs, and logging salaries. Again, coming in I barely knew what those things meant much less how to do them. If you are thinking about applying for the job, the only prerequisite is a reasonable ability to use Excel. Other than that, if you are interested in learning about working in finance, I would certainly recommend applying.

Sophie, Summer 2016 Talk Programming Intern

My first few weeks working as a programming intern on Wake Up With Taylor has been a truly exciting experience. Beyond the obvious thrill of meeting celebrities like Shay Mitchell, Alyssa Milano and actresses from Orange is the New Black (among others), I feel that I have gained confidence in my ability to be a producer. For the first two weeks I worked closely with Katie, the show’s producer, to learn all of the technical skills in the studio, uploading on demand programming and editing audio. After those first 10 days I was able to field calls, take notes on the show and prep pre-recorded interviews, along with everything else the show needs. One day last week Katie was out sick and I felt great “running” the show. So far, everything has been great.

Garrett, Summer 2016 Marketing Intern

With one third of my SiriusXM internship complete, I have found the atmosphere and culture of the office to be one that other companies should strive to achieve. Employees have the freedom to go about their days in a relaxed yet productive manner, and I believe this inspires most people’s best work. Everyone holds themselves accountable, and this mentality translates to success for the entire organization.

Working on the Conversion Marketing Team has provided the opportunity to contribute the Marketing Department’s efforts from Day 1. By the end of the first week, my mentor and I had laid out a plan of action to analyze the subject lines that are used in emails to free trial customers. At the end of the summer, I will be able to report back whether certain tones, words, symbols and other devices encourage greater conversions from a free trial to a paid subscription. Knowing that the work I am doing can help the department operate more efficiently, and thus save the company money, provides the necessary motivation to work hard and consistently strive to contribute.

My main takeaway from the first month has been that even though SiriusXM employs hundreds of individuals, everyone must come together to be able to achieve a singular goal. A great deal of my work involves interacting with others, and I would not be able to complete my own tasks without their cooperation. The support system that exists between departments like Creative, Programming, Legal, and many others is crucial, and having the opportunity to experience the interactions between people from different teams on a daily basis has been extremely valuable.

Ilyssa, Summer 2016 Talk Programming Intern

I was a little nervous about this internship at first. I didn’t know how fast paced or intense everything was going to be or if my bosses or other interns were going to like me. I’ve also gone back and forth between television, radio, and writing with other internships and other experiences at my college. But by far, interning with SiriusXM is basically the best experience of my entire college career. I’m enjoying every minute of my time.

I work with Tell Me Everything with John Fugelsang on SiriusXM Insight (Ch. 121) and everyone has been extremely kind and helpful. Fun fact: Our senior producer Neil Golub graduated from my college, SUNY Oswego. I was extremely surprised when he told me. My mentor, Xorje, has been extremely helpful, kind, and easy-going as well. John Fugelsang himself is also very knowledgeable about the topics given to him, from politics and the never ending Donald Trump hate to the treatment of dogs in animal shelters to general relationship stuff. As John puts it, the channel is basically NPR with humor. The show is a perfect fit for me.

You definitely won’t feel like the intern that just goes to get coffee. You’re actually working on the show: from pitching ideas to taking phone calls to working the sound board. My biggest project this internship is to come up with a few new segment ideas for the show. I have a few ideas in mind already, but I hope one of them really takes off before the internship is over. I’ve also met a wide range of celebrities that have come on to the show (ex. Judah Friedlander (best known as Frank from 30 Rock), Brent Spiner, Rita Coolidge, Tavis Smiley) as well as names I’ve never heard of. One time, we even had a cat guru call in to the show.

Side note, I also went by Nick Jonas as I was walking into work one morning. I’m not kidding. I walked by Nick Jonas and I think he smiled at me as I passed by.

Working on TME and at SiriusXM in general have given me a much clearer direction of what I want to do after college, as well as a fun experience you wish will never end.

Regan, Summer 2016 Marketing Intern (D.C. Office)

I cannot believe that June is almost over, my time spent interning at SiriusXM has flown by.  As this is my first internship, initially it was a little overwhelming, running around to different meetings, meeting many very interesting people, and learning basic office procedures.  But overall, the entire experience has been nothing but enjoyable so far thanks to the amazingly welcoming and supportive atmosphere here.

I have been working with Database Marketing and Affinity Partnerships to help target the market of used car buyers and college students.  I have been compiling data to create a history of the marketing leads provided by third party companies to later reveal market trends.  I also have been researching different music streaming companies and their marketing strategies, particularly how they target college students.   I look forward to learning all the interesting aspects of general office work as well as marketing specifically.

Kavya, Summer 2016 Business Intelligence Intern

This is my second internship with SiriusXM as a Business Intelligence Intern with the data architecture team and it has been one hell of an experience! Internships change the way you look at everything you have learnt in school. My internship taught me how the corporate world works and how my skills can be put to use to build something new and change something old. I was exposed to the world of Data science, analytics and business intelligence. I got to learn so many new technologies and visualization techniques. This is when I truly understood the worth of my computer science skills. I realized that technologies and mediums are going to keep evolving but the knowledge of algorithms and logical reasoning is something that will remain and help you grow. In these times at SiriusXM, I also became more aware of my existence as a woman in the world of Computer science. I never knew it could be so inspiring.  Being the only woman in my team, it makes me proud and motivates me to work harder.

My mentor, Biju is helping and fun to work with. I am grateful to all the members of my team for teaching me so much -Suraj, Habib, Prasad, Nitin and a special thanks to Srikanth for being a professor to me in the office!

Now that I am going to graduate next semester, when I look back I feel blessed to have gotten this opportunity at SiriusXM. I not only found my calling but I also gained the most advanced skills that can change so much in the world. I feel proud when I think that I have decided to dedicate my life to data science, which in my opinion is the most powerful science our world has seen. And if given an opportunity I would love to work with SiriusXM sometime again in the future!
