Interning for SiriusXM this summer exceeded every single expectation I had going into it. Rather than being treated like your typical intern, the Los Angeles crew has welcomed me in as if I am part of the team. Being the only intern at this location, I have been able to fully immerse myself in every aspect of the radio industry and have been constantly challenged and encouraged to grow.
As a Talent and Industry Relations intern, I’ve been given the opportunity to work closely with various celebrity guests on a near daily basis and have forged invaluable connections with a number of publicists. Beyond liaising with guests, I have spent the summer assisting in the process of booking talent for interviews as well as helping producers conduct research for their respective shows.
To demonstrate the skills that I have developed over the course of the summer, I completed a mock interview with Julia, host of LA Daily on Entertainment Weekly. I completed the process entirely on my own – from booking the guest/studio to setting up the board to conducting the actual interview all the way to editing the audio afterwards. This was one of the most memorable experiences from my time here as it allowed me to work on my own in a real-life work setting. Interviewing Julia was an incredible experience and gave me confidence in my on-air skills as well as in my future with radio.
If there is one piece of advice that I can give to future interns, it’s this – take chances. If you are hesitant about the internship or uneasy about the department you’ve been placed in, don’t let it deter you. Make the most of what you’re given and fully immerse yourself. Ask questions constantly. And don’t be afraid to grow. The SiriusXM internship program is absolutely incredible. Don’t let a second of it go to waste.
